What is my IP?
Your public IP address is the identifier that websites, servers and online services see when you connect. This is different from your local/private IP address assigned by your router.
What does my IP address reveal?
Your public IP address reveals more than you might think. Any website you visit can see your IP and use it to determine your approximate geographic location (usually accurate to city level), your Internet Service Provider, and whether you are using a VPN or proxy.
This information is used for content geo-restriction (streaming services blocking content by country), fraud detection, rate limiting, and targeted advertising.
IPv4 vs IPv6 â which do you have?
âšī¸ You are connected via IPv4 (216.73.217.73). This is the most common protocol, though IPv6 adoption is growing.
IPv4 addresses use the familiar format xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (e.g. 192.168.1.1) and support about 4.3 billion unique addresses. IPv6 uses a longer hexadecimal format and provides a virtually unlimited address space, designed to replace IPv4 as the internet grows.
How to find your local IP address
