Everything you need to know about IP addresses and our tools.
What is my IP address?+
Your IP address is a unique numerical label assigned to your device by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). It identifies your device on the internet and is visible to every website and server you connect to. IP Ghost shows you your current public IP address along with your approximate location, ISP and ASN.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?+
IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (e.g. 192.168.1.1) and supports about 4.3 billion unique addresses. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses (e.g. 2001:db8::1) and provides a virtually unlimited address space. Most devices today support both protocols.
Can a website know my exact location from my IP?+
Not exactly. IP geolocation is based on databases maintained by ISPs and geolocation providers. The accuracy varies: it's usually accurate at the country and city level, but can be off by several kilometers or more. Your street-level address is not revealed by your IP.
What is an ASN?+
An Autonomous System Number (ASN) is a unique identifier assigned to a network or organization that controls a block of IP addresses on the internet. It is used for routing decisions between networks. Most ISPs and large companies have their own ASN.
Is IP Ghost free to use?+
Yes, all tools on IP Ghost are completely free to use with no account required. There are no usage limits, no ads on tool results pages (unless AdSense is configured), and no data is stored or sold.
What is a DNS lookup?+
A DNS lookup queries the Domain Name System to resolve a domain name into IP addresses and retrieve DNS records such as A, AAAA, MX, TXT, NS and CNAME records. It is useful for troubleshooting email delivery, verifying DNS propagation and checking domain configuration.
